IoT Data Usage Calculator
Estimate the monthly cellular data of GPS trackers, meters, POS terminals and other IoT devices. Every assumption is editable and the method is shown below; the result is an estimate, so size the final plan from pilot measurements.
Example values are only a starting point; replace them with your device settings.
How the estimate is calculated
The calculator adds up five kinds of traffic for one device per day, multiplies by 30 days, adds the retry margin and then adds firmware updates:
- Reports: active hours × 3,600 ÷ reporting interval, each report counted as payload plus protocol overhead.
- Heartbeats: idle hours × 3,600 ÷ heartbeat interval, each heartbeat counted as its payload plus overhead.
- Events and commands: events, alarms or transactions per day, and downlink commands per day, each with its payload plus overhead.
- Connection setup: new connections per day × bytes per setup.
- Firmware: over-the-air update volume per month, added once.
The fleet total is the per-device figure multiplied by the number of devices. One megabyte is counted as 1,048,576 bytes.
Assumptions worth checking
Protocol overhead is the input most often underestimated. Every message carries IP and transport headers, and a TCP message usually also triggers an acknowledgement, so a 50-byte position report can cost well over 100 bytes on the network. Encrypted connections add a handshake each time a new session starts, which can be several kilobytes. If a device reconnects for every report, the connection setup can use more data than the reports themselves.
Retries also add up. Devices at the edge of coverage, inside vehicles or behind metal enclosures resend messages more often, so keep a margin until you have measured real usage.
How to reduce monthly data
- Report less often while parked or idle, and more often only while moving or when an event occurs.
- Keep one connection open instead of reconnecting for every message, especially over TLS.
- Send compact binary payloads rather than verbose JSON where the platform allows it.
- Schedule firmware updates in stages instead of pushing a full image to the whole fleet at once.
- Use pooled data for fleets so that a few heavy devices do not cause overage.
From estimate to plan
Use the estimate to choose a starting plan, then run a pilot and read real usage per device in the management platform. Our standard GPS tracker plan is 30 MB per month, and fleets above a minimum quantity can share a data pool. See GPS Tracker SIM, browse country plans, or request a project quote.
FAQ
How accurate is this calculator?
It is as accurate as its inputs. The method is simple arithmetic, but payload size, protocol overhead, reconnections and retries vary by device and firmware. Treat the result as a starting estimate and confirm it with measured usage from a pilot.
Why is my real usage higher than the estimate?
The usual causes are frequent reconnections with a TLS handshake, retries in weak coverage, firmware updates, DNS lookups and time synchronisation that were not entered as inputs. Compare the per-device usage in the management platform with the breakdown shown here.
How much data does a GPS tracker use per month?
With the GPS tracker example in this calculator (a report every 30 seconds for 10 active hours a day), a tracker uses a few megabytes per month. Our standard GPS tracker plan is 30 MB per month, which leaves room for shorter intervals, photos, voice features and firmware updates.
Does the calculator include prices?
No. It estimates data volume only. Plan prices depend on the countries and quantity; see the country plans or request a project quote.
